Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki has eased into the third round of the Australian Open women's singles event with a straight-set win over Sweden's Johanna Larsson. The third seed from Denmark won 6-1 6-3 in just 66 minutes.

USA's Sloane Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, was also a comfortable winner against Hungary's Timea Babos. Stephens won 6-3, 6-1 to set up a third-round meeting with Petra Martic.

Australia's own Ashleigh Barty impressed one and all on Rod Laver Arena by dispatching China's Yafan Wang. The 15th seed won 6-2 6-3 in just over an hour.

There were some notable upsets too in the women's singles draw. Ninth seed Kiki Bertens was sent home by world number 42 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. This, despite the Dutch player taking the opening set.

Pavlyuchenkova, a former Australian Open quarter-finalist, won 3-6 6-3 6-3 in one hour 48 minutes. The other seeded player to exit was 29th seed Donna Vekic. The Croat was beaten 4-6, 6-4, 1-6 by wildcard Kimberly Birrell.
