Washington: Brazilian football star, Bruno de Souza has been found guilty of ordering hit men to brutally murder her ex-girlfriend, Eliza Samudio in June 2010 and taking hostage her son, and the goalkeeper has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Investigators said Souza had hired hit men to kill Samudio, whose dead body was dismembered and parts of them were fed to dogs, to avoid paying child support, the New York Daily News reports.

Defense lawyers told local media they already expected a conviction but would appeal, it further reported.

The goalkeeper had already been convicted of kidnapping Samudio and forcing her to terminate her pregnancy, and he was serving a prison sentence of four years and six months in that case, the paper said.

The judge said Bruno's sentence was reduced because of his confession, and according to Brazilian law, he could be allowed some freedom in about three or four years, depending on his behavior in prison, as no one can serve more than 30 years in prison in Brazil. The 28-year-old Bruno was captain of the Flamengo team that won the Brazilian league title in 2009, and was touted to move to European football and even contend for a spot in the Brazil national team.

Bruno's ex-wife, Dayanne Rodrigues, was found not guilty of Samudio's kidnapping because the jury said she acted under pressure from Bruno and others involved in the crimes, the paper added.

Last year, one of Bruno's friends and another ex-girlfriend were found guilty of their involvement.
