A voluntary forum organised a marathon run over the weekend in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, to spread mass awareness about ways to prevent cancer.

The marathon, supported by various NGOs and corporate houses, was an endeavour to highlight the essence of a healthy life.

Runners from several states also participated in the marathon.

"There is a phenomenal number of increase in cancer, especially breast, cervix and all types of malignancies. And, it is basically to say that cancer is not a death sentence, it is just a comma in life. If you have suffered from cancer, you can come back and live a good life again," said Balaji, an organiser of the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation.

Around 8500 enthusiasts took part in this marathon event that was held in three categories - 21 kilometres for men, 10 and 5 kilometres for women.

Participants who took part in the marathon race varied from different age groups. Age was never an issue as there were elderly runners as well.

"I feel very good. I am a cancer survivor so I feel very good that I am able to participate in this. I was diagnosed seven years back, so I am very happy," said one of the participants who happened to be a cancer patient.

The winners were given medals and also cash prizes. (ANI)
