Tonight’s clash between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Daredevils is a crunch encounter for both sides. For me, Delhi have been the most
underperforming team of the tournament. They have a reasonable bowling line-up, but are heavily reliant on the batting performances of Sehwag,
Warner and Jayawardene.
When they don’t fire, the team struggles, which has happened too many times this season. On a positive note, they have three wins from their last four games, so will be high on confidence and looking to continue that run.
Hyderabad, led by the impressive Kumar Sangakkara, have seen strong games from Dale Steyn and Shikhar Dhawan. They’re not a bad all round team, but consistency has been a problem. In the last meeting between the two, they restricted Delhi to 8/114 and won the game, which is exactly what they need to do again in this one.
Containing Delhi’s big three is the challenge and will be their key to victory. That being said, I think Delhi’s winning run will continue in this one. They seem to have turned the corner and are playing well, which will prove too much for their more fancied rivals.
Looking wider at the competition, my early tip for the title is Chennai, who have now amazingly won seven games in a row and look to be getting
stronger with every game. The Super Kings have been the powerhouse club in the Indian Premier League since its inception, and it seems things will move that way again in 2013.
MS Dhoni has been outstanding - proving just how destructive he is with the bat. Crucially, as a leader, he brings up the standard of those around him, making it all the more strange that people were calling for his head after the England tour of India.
For me, CSK will be in the final at the very least – I’m expecting a third title which would be a fantastic achievement.
