The Indian team may not have brought back the World Cup but they returned with their heads held high and in the process made almost every Indian feel a sense of pride at their achievement.

It was a professionalperformance with a superb batting display with someattractive strokes and powerful hitting, backed up bya tidy bowling and fielding exhibition. Perhapspredictably, the Australians were always going to takecricket’s ultimate prize.

Australia have had a smooth drive to the finals with hardly ever having to even apply the brakes. India on the other hand have had one major road-block in the Australians, to whom they lost quite badly in an earlier round. It is now an opportunity for India to exact revenge and with it also emboss their name on the World Cup.

The Australians have done it again. It is quite unbelievable how they have the ability to dig themselves out of a hole, somehow score enough runs tobe reasonably competitive, put pressure on the opposition by capturing early wickets, and then winthe match convincingly.

If a team is looking for near-perfection, India achieved that against Sri Lanka at the Wanderers,Johannesburg. This emphatic win by 183 runs allows India to not only qualify for the semi-finals, butalso to avoid an earlier clash with Australia, with the view of meeting them in the final, in what could be a classic showdown.

Composure under pressure and sensible constructivebatting were the two basic ingredients that enabled the New Zealand Black Caps to beat Zimbabwe atGoodyear Park, Bloemfontein, by six wickets with 16 balls to spare in their first Super Six match on Saturday.
