The Pune Warriors’ last game was to fight for the wooden spoon and having lost that they now are at the bottom of the table. That is hard to understand for they do have a good side, but somehow have not been able to gel together and thus are languishing at the bottom like they did last year too. They are pretty much out of contention and can play party poopers like Delhi can, though of course technically they can qualify for the knockouts.
The question however is how much desire do they have and how much extra effort are they prepared to put in and raise the level of their game. Too many of their big bucks players are not providing the bang for the bucks. Too many of their players are seemingly satisfied with little when they are capable of more.
The effort level is not quite there. It is the middle of the summer and its not easy to be out there in the sun but if only some of them had seen the wholehearted efforts of Dale Steyn in Jaipur, they would have been motivated to do the same.
The effort level was not just in the bowling but in the fielding and the manner in which the best fast bowler in the world was throwing himself first left, then right and then left again and sprawling on the ground trying to save boundaries showed what commitment is. He could have done damage to his bowling shoulder but he was not concerned and was trying till the winning hit was made.
The Pune team won’t find it easy against the table leaders as the Chennai team are coming into their own and showing why they are the team to beat. If another example of commitment was needed then you could see it from Mike Hussey, who after missing out on a century by just five runs was on the field from the first ball and then got a direct hit to run the dangerous Manvinder Bisla out.
That is what professionalism is about. Hussey has nothing left to prove and he is retired from international cricket but he has pride in his performance and so there won’t be any lack of effort. He has now got big scores in just about every game he has played, and it is his batting that is giving the Chennai team the quick yet solid start that is so essential in this form of the game.
Dwayne Bravo is another and Chennai are truly blessed to have players of such commitment and desire to be the best. This makes the job of the skipper easier but he also has played some scintillating innings to lead from the front.
Pune play at home, but in the kind of form the Chennai team are in, it is hard to visualise anything other than a win for them.
