Nikolay Davydenko recovered to avoid a swift first-round exit at Wimbledon on Monday with grinding five-set win over South African Kevin Anderson which lasted over four hours.

The Russian seventh seed, who missed the French Open because of a wrist injury and has struggled to recapture the form that helped him win the ATP World Tour finals last year, finally won through 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 9-7 on Court One.
Davydenko had lost in the first round five times in eight visits here and seemed set to extend that dismal record but came back from two sets down to win in four hours and 13 minutes.
He will face Germany's Daniel Brands for a place in the third round.
