Former World number one Roger Federer had to dig deep in his quarter-final clash against Hungarian Marton Fucsovics to inch closer to title No. 100 at the Dubai ATP event. The Swiss maestro saved two set points in an opening-set tie-break before prevailing 7-6(6), 6-4 in one hour and 56 minutes.
The seven-time champion in Dubai will now face Borna Coric in the semi-final.
"I'm very happy to have found a way to the semis. It was a good level of play considering all the difficulties that were on the court today," the 20-time Grand Slam champion said.
With the win, Federer also maintained his unbeaten streak in the quarterfinals in Dubai. The clash against Coric will be his 11th appearance at the last-four stage of the tournament, where he holds a 51-6 record. A win against the Croat will take him to his 10th final at the event.
The 37-year-old Swiss will be gunning for an eighth crown which will make him only the second player in the Open Era to win 100 tour-level trophies.
American legend Jimmy Connors is the only other player to accomplish the feat, having captured 109 titles during his illustrious career.
