Daredevils blown away by Gayle storm

The happenings off the field may have taken front pages but the mayhem on the field has been riveting too. Chris Gayle in particular has simply demolished teams single-handedly and in the process has gone so far ahead of the other batsmen that he can pack the orange cap given to the highest run-getter of the tournament and send it to Jamaica right now. There doesn’t seem to be anybody within striking distance of the Jamaican.

There have been other performances too, but nothing quite like the ones that Gayle has dished out. What has been seen this time around is that Gayle is not going for the big shots straightaway but taking his time to settle down and get a feel of the wicket and the surroundings and then launching the assault which has been pretty unstoppable.

The one innings that he has failed is where he tried to do something different, moving away from the stumps and trying to hit the ball. It is when he is just standing tall and driving like a golfer that he has hit those massive sixes and dented stadium roofs.

If he has clubbed the bowlers to get his runs, then Rohit Sharma has caressed the ball to different parts of the field. His hundred against the Kolkata team was as good a hundred that one could see in any form of the game. The Eden Gardens crowd loved it even though it was against their team and they now have a new hero whose batting they will thoroughly enjoy.

Rohit has all the talent in the world but that is not always allied to temperament and that is why the consistency that will get him an India place is not there. If only he can show a little patience as Gayle has been doing then he too will hit the big ones regularly and press for a slot in the Indian team.

The Hussey brothers are consistency personified and they give their best to whichever team they play for and are through team men  not just in words but in action too. David captaining the Punjab Team as Gilchrist was injured has been brilliant as a leader too and the way some of the younger players have flowered under him is a credit to his leadership.

Gilchrist is now back and with a big score too and that makes the Punjab team even stronger. By the time you read this you will know whether they have made it or not but the Punjab team has definitely been impressive and done their franchise owners proud.

Chris Gayle for his big scores is the CEAT International Cricketer of the Week.
