Sports ministry is awaiting for the results after Olympic bronze medallist, Vijender Singh, accused of consuming heroin, submitted samples to the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).
Union Sports Minister, Jitendra Singh said on Thursday that they would take necessary steps only after the results of the test are out.
Pugilist Singh, whose middleweight bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics helped raise the profile of boxing in India, landed in trouble after last month's $24 million drug haul in Punjab when a fellow boxer told the investigators he and Singh consumed heroin supplied by the drug dealer.
Earlier, Punjab police detained super heavyweight boxer Ram Singh after seizing heroin and other drugs worth over one billion rupees from his relative's house at Sangrur.
Jitender Singh said that the government would initiate steps to rehabilitate the sportspersons who had taken drugs.
"The government is planning to bring in compulsory testing for all sportspersons who are trained by the Sports Authority of India or are working with the Sports Authority of India . We are also looking into the deeper side of it in terms of seeing that how sportspersons who have taken drugs are rehabilitated. Sportspersons don't indulge in such activities," he added.
Earlier, Ram Singh, a super heavyweight boxer and friend of Olympic bronze-medallist Vijender Singh, was expelled from the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala after he admitted to taking drugs.
Incidentally, the NIS ousted Ram Singh and not Vijender Singh.
Ram Singh, also a former national championship medallist, confessed that he experimented with contraband substance along with Vijender, although he has denied the allegations.
Reportedly he had also admitted that he knew the drug peddler Anup Singh Kahlon.
Police busted an international drug-peddling nexus with the arrest of Kulwinder Singh alias Rocky including one NRI Anup Singh Kahlon . The massive drug haul worth 1.3 billion rupees from Mohali has been confiscated.
According to reports, the police have said that Anup Singh is linked to Vijender and Ram. The police have alleged that the car of Vijender's wife was found outside the Zirakpur flat and 10 kilograms of heroin was also recovered from another car.
Ace southpaw Vijender Singh, 27, works as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Haryana.
