Host India's quarter-final opponents on December 13 in the 2018 Hockey World Cup will be three-time champions Netherlands. This, after the European giants beat Canada 5-0 in the last cross-over clash at the Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
After a goalless first quarter, Lars Balk gave the Dutch team a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. It could have been 2-0 for the Dutch but Jeroen Hertzberger missed the penalty stroke in the 17th minute. The Europeans did manage to get the second goal in the 20th minute through another field goal by Robbert Kemperman.
In the 40th minute of the third quarter, Thijs van Dam made it 3-0 for the Dutch, while in the next minute, Thierry Brinkman added a fourth to virtually knock Canada out of the game. Thijs added a second to his tally in the 58th minute to make it 5-0 for the Dutch before the final whistle.
Meanwhile, in the penultimate cross-over clash played earlier in the day, Olympic silver medalists and the third best side in the world Belgium eased into the quarter-final by blanking Pakistan 5-0. Alexander Hendrickx, Thomas Briels, Cedric Charlier, Sebastien Dockier and Tom Boon scored for the Red Lions, who will now face Germany in the last-eight clash on Thursday.
