Hughes expected his omission from Australia Test side

Melbourne: Axed Australia opener Phillip Hughes is not at all surprised on losing his place to Ed Cowan for the first cricket Test against India, but vowed to return soon after sorting out his "technical" issues with personal coach Neil D'Costa.

Hughes, along with Usman Khawaja, was dropped from Australia's 13-member squad for the first Test against India starting December 26, thereby paving the way for Cowan to make his debut here.

"I got the call last night from (national selector) John Inverarity. I expected it. I haven't got enough runs in the past few weeks. I fully understand it," Hughes said.

"I'm going to speak to John again over the next week or so. But it comes down to weight of runs. Ed Cowan has taken his opportunity. He scored another hundred in this game, batted beautifully and I wish Ed all the best for Melbourne. He's scored heavily over the past month, he's in really good form and I hope he carries that form on."

Out of the team, Hughes is bracing for an intense one-on-one training stint with private coach D'Costa after a Christmas holiday at the family home in New South Wales.

"You go out there, nick a couple and you know that everyone's talking about it," he was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.

"It made me shy away from my natural game a bit. I didn't really hold my shape and play my natural positive game. I was coming off the ball a bit, which made me nick balls to the slip region. That's something we're (me and D'Costa) going to sort out over the next couple of weeks. We're going to fine-tune my technique. Obviously there's a couple of areas there that need to be worked on.

"I know that technically there's work I need to do. And I'm willing to do the work to improve the areas I need to."
