The Indian football team beat Thailand 4-1 on Sunday in Abu Dhabi to record their first win at the Asian Cup finals since 1964. Captain Sunil Chhetri scored a brace, while Anirudh Thapa and Jeje Lalpekhlua rounded off the win. For Thailand, the lone goal came from Teerasil Dangda.

Playing in their fourth Asian Cup, this was India's third triumph in 11 matches. The country had won two matches in the 1964 edition in Israel.

With his two goals, Chhetri has overtaken Lionel Messi to become the second highest-scoring active international player. Chhetri moved onto 66 goals, one more than Messi. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (85) is ahead of him.

This was India's first victory against Thailand since the Merdeka Cup of 1986. This was also India's highest victory margin against Thailand. In 1986, India had won 3-1 thanks to a hat-trick by the legendary Krishanu Dey.

The win put India at the top of the points table in Group A. They are followed by Bahrain and hosts UAE, who had played out a 1-1 stalemate in the tournament opener on Saturday.A draw in either of the two coming matches against UAE and Bahrain could see India make the knock out round.
