Good start for Australia's new Twenty20 skipper George Bailey. Making his debut as the leader isn't an easy job, but Bailey couldn't have asked for a better start to his international career. All throughout the tour, the Australians have managed to keep the Indians under pressure so the same was expected out of the new look T20 team ahead of the all important ODI tri series.
There has been a lot of talk on Matthew Wade's selection. He had been knocking the door for sometime now and on Wednesday we saw why he deserved the slot. He has got a couple of matches to prove his worth and having seen him play; I feel he is good enough for Test cricket. He is excellent behind the stumps and can bat as good as a regular batsman, which makes him a genuine all-rounder. There is no doubt about Brad Haddin’s quality as a cricketer but Wade’s performance has surely put more pressure on Haddin, who in the recent times hasn't performed as well as he is expected to.
Warner's switch hit ignites debate
In front of the huge crowd, India having won the toss should have batted first. We saw it in the Big Bash League that most of the teams who have batted first have won the game. Their batting lineup has been a big let down so far and batting first would have allowed them to play slightly more freely. Indians having not played here before might have thought it would be better to have a look at the wicket sending Australia in first but then it didn’t work for them. In this format it’s always advisable to put runs on the board and then apply the pressure.
However even in the chase, they failed to show any sort of a fight. It was unfortunate that Virender Sehwag once again failed to apply himself. His feet are not moving and he is looking to play across the line. A delight to watch he can be equally frustrating as well. He needs to understand that in this format of the game, if he lasts for 10 overs then his team wins the game. Virat Kohli was looking really good and it's a shame that he got out when well set but once again the middle order let them down. The batting is a big concern and I hope it comes good ahead of the ODIs. They have Manoj Tiwary in the reserves and having seen him play in the IPL, he looks impressive and I feel should be tried out in the next game.
Also I was thoroughly disappointed with the Indian bowling selections. The medium pacers were similar sort of bowlers and there was no variety. I failed to understand why there were so many spinners playing. The leggie Rahul Sharma who had impressed all in the IPL, bowled decently but there should have been another pace bowler in the lineup in place of any of the three spinners. The job that David Hussey does so well for Australia in this format can very well done by someone like Sehwag or Suresh Raina. I hope they make those changes ahead of today's game.
