India defeated Australia by eight wickets on the fifth and final day of the first Test that was played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here.
Needing a mere 50 runs to wrap the match up, India lost the wickets of its openers Murali Vijay and Virender Sehawag before batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar smashed two sixes to bring a quick end to what was an already an inevitable result.
Replying to Australia's first innings total of 380, India scored 572 with skipper M.S.Dhoni scoring a massive 224 with 23 fours and five sixes. Australian fast bowler James Pattinson claimed five wickets for 96 runs.
Facing a deficit of 192, Australia could score only 241 in their second innings, losing all their wickets to Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (5-95) Ravindra Jadeja (3-72) and Harbhajan Singh (2 for 51). For the Australians, all-rounder Moises Henriques scored an unbeaten 81 in their second innings.
The Indians achieved victory 40 minutes before the lunch break on day five.
The second Test match will be palyed in Hyderabad from March 2 onwards. (ANI)
