India vs Australia, ODI, 3rd League match, Titan Cup, Bangalore, 21st October 1996
Result: India won by two wickets
The Indian bowlers didn’t allow Australia to capitalize as electing to bat first, Australia’s innings never picked up momentum. Barring their captain, Mark Taylor who made a patient 105 off 144 deliveries, the rest of the batsmen failed to get going.
Taylor’s century was the only bright spark as Australia ended up with a below par 215/7 off their 50 overs.
India made heavy weather of a regulation chase and slumped to 47/4 before Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja revived their hopes with a gritty partnership for the fifth wicket.
However, another mini-collapse reduced India to 164/8 and India looked to have botched an easy chase. Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble got them back on course with an invaluable partnership nudging the ball around while also capitalising on loose deliveries to take India home with seven deliveries to spare.
Even though Tendulkar was adjudged Man of the Match for his valiant 88, Srinath and Kumble were the real heroes guiding India home from a precarious position.
