This match had added spice as the winner would play South Africa in the final. Sachin Tendulkar went after the bowling right from the start taking full advantage of the field restrictions in the first 15 overs.
Mohammad Azharuddin rolled back the years with a vintage knock full of delectable strokes. Ajay Jadeja and Nayan Mongia provided the finishing kick to the innings as India posted a competitive 289/6 off their 50 overs.
Australia got off to a good start with Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh putting on 84 for the first wicket before Waugh was dismissed. Australia looked to be coasting at 241/4 when they committed hara-kiri and were reduced to 273/9.
They needed six runs off the last over with one wicket in hand. Nayan Mongia affected a run out at the non-striker's end off the first ball off the last over to seal India's place in the final.
