India’s top five victories by innings margins

India’s latest innings & 135 runs victory against Australia at Hyderabad is their sixth best by innings margins in the annals of Test cricket. In this context, it is indeed interesting to peep into details of their top five triumphs:

• Innings & 239 runs against Bangladesh at Dhaka in May, 2007: The match was finished inside three days as top four Indian batsmen, Dinesh Karthik, Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid & Sachin Tendulkar - all scored centuries, a world record, after being sent in to bat first. But the Man of the Match award was bagged by Zaheer Khan for his haul of seven for 88.

• Innings & 219 runs against Australia at Kolkata in March, 1998: Although India scored more than 600 runs in their only outings at the crease it was bowler Javagal Srinath to pocket the coveted Man of the Match award for his match figures of six for 124. His Karnataka teammate Anil Kumble also chipped in with eight wickets including fifer in the second essay as match got over with a day to spare.

• Innings & 198 runs against New Zealand at Nagpur in November, 2010: The only centurion in the match which lasted four days, Mohammad Azharuddin (191) who batted 27 minutes short of ten hours, bagged the Man of the Match award as well. The Kiwis innings of 193 & 175 were built around this innings.

• Innings & 144 runs against Sri Lanka at Kanpur in November, 2009: India registered its hundredth Test victory on the penultimate day of the match. Although the first three batsmen Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag & Rahul Dravid all scored centuries, it was left to Shanthakumaran Sreesanth to bag the Man of the Match award for his fifer in the first innings.

• Innings & 140 runs against Bangladesh at Dhaka in December, 2004: The match lasted four days with Sachin Tendulkar registering his
highest ever Test score making 248 not out in 552 minutes off 379 deliveries with the help of 35 boundaries. However, it was once again
bowler Irfan Pathan who bagged the coveted Man of the Match award with his superb efforts of five for 45 and six for 51.
