Sunil Gavaskar Sunil Gavaskar, World Cup 1975
This innings of the Little Master was so slow that many thought he was playing for a draw. The only hitch was, it was a one-dayer. India were playing England in the first match of the first World Cup. The hosts had scored 334/4 from their allotted 60 overs. For the record, Dennis Amiss scored a ton and Chris Old chipped in with 51 n.o. off 30 balls. India were expected to respond with a bang, but Gavaskar's 36 not out off 174 balls spilled water over the Indian plans. And when the last ball was bowled, India were 202 runs short of victory, with seven wickets in hand.
