The manner in which Chennai have pulled of wins in the last couple of their games will give them plenty of confidence as they take on one of the top four teams, the Rajasthan Royals. The Chennai team have surprisingly lost twice already at their fortress, the Chidambaram stadium, and so they owe it to their fans not to disappoint them again.
The one man who is playing quite brilliantly is Ravindra Jadeja. When he was bought for two million dollars it was thought that the Chennai team had paid way over the top to acquire him, but he has shown that the investment is paying off.
He was understandably tense last season since India had come from an ordinary season in Australia and a rare failure to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup. He was one of the players who had not lived up to expectations then, but one year can change a lot of things.
Jadeja seems to have learnt from his failures and has used the criticism positively to improve his game and has now become not just a vital member of the Chennai team but also the Indian team. There will always be those who will argue that he has to do well overseas too, but then these people will also want the player to do well on Mars, if he does well abroad too.
The other Chennai player who is worth his weight in gold is Mike Hussey. If Dravid is the player that most captains would want in their team for the way he will accept any job given to him, so also Mike Hussey will try his utmost in any responsibility he is given. One of the reasons that the Chennai team looks so good is because there have not been too many personnel changes in their squad. There is a settled look about it and they have some good local players.
That is not the case with most other teams who are struggling with their local talent and so are dependent on their outstation and overseas players. Here again, Chennai have an advantage in these players’ attitude and approach, for they are always looking to go out and give it their best effort.
The Rajasthan team know that they need Watson to fire and get the quick runs at the top of the order. He had his first spell of bowling in Bangalore and without really going flat out, he bowled within himself and looked good. He can only get better as he bowls more and that is a big plus for Rajasthan, for it gives them a bit more flexibility in picking their playing eleven.
It should be Chennai’s game, but then we have seen in this IPL that the Royals can spring a surprise or two.
