It was desperate times for both teams, as Australia lost both their opening games and India had just one point, sharing the spoils thanks to a washout.
The match itself progressed nicely, Australia getting up to 237 thanks to a Dean Jones 90. In reply, India were going rather steadily, when rain struck. India were 45/1 after 16.2, the revised target ended up being 236 off 47 ??? just one run less to get but three whole overs docked. It was tough going, but not impossible.
After a brilliant 93 by Md. Azharuddin, things came down to the tail. Kiran More tried an audacious shot with 5 to get off 4 balls, and ended up losing his middle stump to Tom Moody. Manoj Prabhakar came in , his first ball faced should have been a run out ??? Steve Waugh missed the stumps. The next ball was sent by Javagal Srinath right to Allan Border, and Manoj Prabhakar was already 75% down the wicket, an easy run out.
Venky Raju came, but Srinath was the man in the hot seat. All sorts of drama happened ??? all heightened because Bill Lawry was at the mic. Srinath heaved ??? and for a while it looked to be going for six. But Steve Waugh was at the boundary and dropped it ??? but fired it back in ??? it was a fantastic throw and David Boon ??? wicketkeeper - easily took the bails off. Raju was short of his crease for the third run, and Australia ended up winning by one run ??? a quite dramatic finish (though not as much as the one they would have 7 years hence in a semifinal).
