Olympic champion Dementieva off to flier in Tokyo

Russia's Elena Dementieva secured a spot in the season-ending WTA Championships with a 6-0, 6-3 win over France's Alize Cornet at the Pan Pacific Open on Thursday.

The Olympic champion required just 69 minutes to win her opening match and book her place in the quarter-finals of the $1.34 million Tokyo tournament.

The third seed, ranked fourth in the world, has won twice on the WTA Tour this year, including victory at last month's Beijing Olympics, going one better than her silver in 2000.

Six of the world's top 10 players are appearing in this week's $1.34 million Tokyo event.
