Punjab will be a tough nut to crack: Gayle

It sure felt good to beat Pune the other night and finally break the jinx that was accompanying us on our road trips. That result has launched us to second in the table but there’s no time to dwell on that with three more away games to come starting with Kings XI Punjab today. They will surely prove a tough nut to crack as it’s a game Punjab really need to win to keep their playoff chances alive. From our point of view, we know another win would virtually seal our own qualification.

Seeing as I primarily serve my team as a batsman in this format, whenever the opportunity to roll my arm over comes along, I do enjoy it. This season, the skipper has called on me to bowl on just a couple of occasions, and I’d like to believe he would have been happy with the returns. I’m not sure whether the results might encourage him to make greater use of my bowling ability, but what I am sure about is, whenever called upon, I’ll be ready.

The celebratory moves of a few of the West Indian cricketers have also added colour to the cricket. I’m more than delighted to be a part of the distinguished group where the other notable members are Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo. With so many individual awards up for grabs, were they to have one for the best entertainer, I would give it to Bravo. He’s never one to disappoint when it comes to putting on a show for the fans. Me, I’m unpredictable, it’s more a spur of the moment thing.

On a more sober note, I’d like to take the opportunity to congratulate Dwayne on succeeding Darren as West Indies ODI captain. I’m sure the selectors simply did what they felt might serve the side better at this moment in time. Darren always enjoyed great support from his teammates and it will surely be no different for Dwayne. The Champions Trophy is a big event and I wish Dwayne all the best with the hope he can lead us to glory in his first tournament as skipper.

I’m also delighted for my RCB teammate Vinay Kumar who has been recalled to India’s ODI team. It’s his just reward for the outstanding IPL season he is having. Hopefully he will be a more relaxed individual now which should help him do even better for the RCB team for the rest of the campaign.
