Our journey continues in the IPL with another tight finish. It was another game where our backs were up against the walls and we showed immense character and attitude to win the game. We had to chase 171 runs to win, where at one point of time we were 51 for five and were staring at defeat. Nine out of ten people would have backed Bangalore to win the game.
But cometh the man, cometh the hour. Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard raised their hands and stitched a perfect partnership to take us through. They started with singles and kept looking for those scoring opportunities. They had the belief and the ability to make those runs and they backed themselves to the hilt.
Particularly in this IPL, we have seen that no total, no run rate seems impossible and batting sides are leaving no stones unturned to get those runs. The idea is to look for that one big over and not to miss any opportunity to score runs.
Rayudu now has become a pioneer in these conditions and has a great mind over young shoulders. He is a clean striker of the ball and the biggest hallmark of his batting is his ability to pick the right ball. The increasing run rate and the pressure around it doesn’t make him waver and lose the focus on the job.More columns
Pollard joined him at a very critical juncture and he displayed his powers with some immaculate hitting. After losing a few games due to injury, he is back and means business. It is so good to know that most of our batsmen have played one or two innings full of substance and character. Just when we are entering the critical stage of the tournament, these small things give a lot of boost to your confidence.
On the bowling front I won’t hesitate to admit that we could have done a little better. We got some early wickets, including the prize wicket of Chris Gayle. At one stage Royal Challengers Bangalore were 87 for 4 with most of their star batsmen back in the hut. But Mayank Agarwal played an exceptional knock down the order to make things tough for us.
All’s well that ends well. We have gained some momentum and will give our best to sustain it. Our next game against Kolkata Knight Riders would be a tough challenge. They have lost two games in a row and will come hard at us to arrest their slide. Irrespective of the result, they are one of the strongest sides in the league this season and we will give them their due respect. We will have to be on the top of our game to beat a side like them.
