Royal and Ancient golf club branded 'national disgrace' by feminist for men-only policy

The exclusive Royal and Ancient (RandA) golf club has come under heavy criticism from feminists for persisting with its men-only policy.

Although the club admitted former US secretary of state Condoleeza Rice and financier Darla Moore as members after 80 years of the policy following a decade of opposition, however, the RandA prepares to take the Open this year without any female members, the Mirror reports.

Slamming the RandA for still refusing to admit female members, American feminist Martha Burk has branded it a 'national disgrace' and called on the UK to continue the campaign, adding that to be behind Augusta National in terms of sex discrimination is a low place for the club.

Burk, the chairperson of the National Council of Women's Organizations (NCWO), further said that it will be harder for the club to defend its male-only policy to the public, to lawmakers who may directly or indirectly provide resources, and to sponsors.

Stating that as a ruling body of golf, the RandA can end the controversy by declaring clubs that discriminate as ineligible to host official tournaments, Burk said that putting pressure on public officials to continue to speak out will also force the club to end its policy.

Stating that shame can be a powerful motivator, Burk said that the club is literally at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to sex discrimination. (ANI)
