Surrey pacer Stuart Meaker has been called up to join the England squad touring India as cover for injured fast bowler Steven Finn, the England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed.
Meaker, 23, will fly out next week to cover for the Middlesex cricketer, who suffered a thigh injury while bowling in England's tour opener against India A, and is now doubtful to play in the first of a four-Test series starting at Ahmedabad on November 15.
"Meaker, who has been capped twice in the 50-over format, will return to the England Performance Programme once Finn is available for selection," The Telegraph quoted the England and Wales Cricket Board, as saying in a statement.
According to the paper, Finn was England's most effective pace bowler in India in a one-day series this time last year and was due to slot in alongside James Anderson and Stuart Broad in the first Test.
Meaker himself has pace, and like Finn he can reach 90 miles per hour, but at 6ft 1in, he is six inches shorter than the man he is replacing, so lacks Finn's bounce and penetration, the paper said.
The alternative for England could be to pick a second spinner, Monty Panesar, to partner Graeme Swann, and to play India at their own game, it added. (ANI)
