FUJI, Japan: Team by team analysis of Sunday's Japanese Formula One Grand Prix (listed in championship order):
----------------
FERRARI (Kimi Raikkonen 3, Felipe Massa 7)
Raikkonen's first points in five races, first podium finish since August but the end of his title defence, with the Finn now mathematically out of contention. Massa finished eighth but gained a place when Toro Rosso's Bourdais was demoted to 10th. The Brazilian is now five points adrift of Lewis Hamilton, with whom he collided in the race. Ferrari regained the lead in the constructors' standings.
---------------
MCLAREN (Lewis Hamilton 12, Heikki Kovalainen retired)
Hamilton started on pole position and ended up empty-handed after a poor start, for which he collected a drive-through penalty, and the collision with Massa which dropped him to the back. Kovalainen retired with an engine failure on lap 17.
---------------
BMW-SAUBER (Robert Kubica 2, Nick Heidfeld 9)
BMW maintained their status as the only team to have scored in every race this season. Kubica held off Raikkonen to narrow the gap between him and Hamilton to 12 points and take BMW's 11th podium of the year. Heidfeld started 16th.
---------------
RENAULT (Fernando Alonso 1, Nelson Piquet 4)
Alonso's second win in a row and 21st of his career, from fourth on the starting grid. Renault consolidated their grip on fourth place.
---------------
TOYOTA (Jarno Trulli 5, Timo Glock retired)
Trulli led the race for three laps before pitting on lap 21 and then again before his second stop. He said the cold temperatures did not help the team. Glock retired after the seat fixings were damaged when he went off on lap five.
---------------
TORO ROSSO (Sebastian Vettel 6, Sebastien Bourdais 10)
Vettel finished seventh but inherited sixth when Bourdais was given a post-race 25 second penalty for a collision with Massa and demoted to 10th. Bourdais, who led the race briefly, blamed Massa for the incident.
---------------
RED BULL (Mark Webber 8, David Coulthard retired)
Webber finished ninth but also benefitted from Bourdais' penalty. Coulthard crashed out heavily at the start when his car's rear suspension broke after contact with others at the first corner. The Scot will need a new chassis for China.
