India vs Pakistan, Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket- Final, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, 10th March 1985
Even though both teams had participated in three World Cups prior to this, they had never faced off against each other in a major global event. In a Group match earlier in the tournament, India had got the better of their arch- rivals by six wickets.
18 days later, they squared up against each other in the final. Pakistan opting to bat first posted a total of 176/9 in 50 overs. Both Imran Khan and Javed Miandad enjoyed the benefit of dubious umpiring decisions. However, India won in a canter by 8 wickets with Kris Srikkanth winning the Player of the Match and Ravi Shastri being adjudged the Player of the Series. This was the first of many such epic tussles between the teams over the years.
