Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has said that prioritizing worldwide Internet connectivity over malaria research is a 'joke'.

The Microsoft co-founder believes that though improvements in technology is 'amazing' and may have their benefits, they still would fail to meet the needs of the world's most desperate as PCs are still not in the hierarchy of human needs atleast in the 'first five rungs'.

According to the Huffington Post, Gates' comments come just a few months after Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and a group of other tech moguls, who positioned Internet connectivity as a humanitarian concern, promised to bring Internet access to the entire world.

The report mentioned that Gates has been a vocal advocate for malaria research for years and as co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the philanthropist has put billions of dollars into improving healthcare and fighting poverty in developing countries, a major part of which is focused on tackling diseases like malaria, HIV and polio.
