Aadhaar card and PAN Card

The New Year's eve is here and before you start working on your resolutions, there's something that you must do - link PAN with Aadhaar.

The linking has been mandatory by the Income tax department. In case you have missed the previous deadline of September 30, you can do so by December 31, 2019, the new deadline.

Failing to link Permanent Account number with Aadhar is likely to take a toll on your income tax returns. In fact if you fail to link, your income returns will be rejected even if one does not fall under taxable income slabs.

Linking PAN card with Aadhaar card is simple and can be done in two ways. You will need numbers for both the documents and ensure that the name appears correctly on both of them. In case of a mismatch you may have to reach out to either the Aadhaar enrolment centre or fill a PAN change request. You also need to ensure that the mobile phone numbers on both the documents is the same.

The first method:

To link Aadhar and PAN via SMS, type UIDAI space 12-digit Aadhaar card number space 10-character alphanumeric PAN details and send it as an SMS to 567678 or 56161.

If your 12 digit Aadhar number is 1234 5678 9012 and PAN is AAAA1122B, the sample SMS wil be UIDAI space 123456789012 AAAA1122B and send it to 567678 or 56161.

A notification of the PAN-Aadhar linkage should be received soon.

Second Method:

You can also link Aadhaar and PAN on the Income Tax Department website. You will have to register for an account on the website - incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.

After the registration and logging into the website, look out for a 'Link Aadhaar' option on the left. The website will prompt you to enter details such as PAN number, Aadhaar number and other details. Click on 'Link Aadhaar' once you have entered the relevant details. The website will send an OTP on the registered mobile number to authenticate the linking request.

Once the details are matched your PAN-Aadhaar linking should be successful.
