Aadyarathri review: Lowbrow comedy

Star Cast

Biju Menon, Aju Varghese, Anaswara Rajan

The combo consisting of Jibu Jacob, Biju Menon and Aju Varghese had created a storm in the box office, when they teamed up for the hit movie, Vellimoonga. When they come again, this time with Aadyarathri, it is less effective.

The story begins with a detailed flashback sequence that shows how Manoharan (Biju Menon) became the popular personality cum wedding broker in the coastal town of Mullakkara. His sister had eloped with her lover a day before the wedding then. This led to a tragic situation as his father died on hearing this news.

Manoharan is now older but is still a bachelor.  He is totally against romance or love marriages and the youngsters in the area are all scared of him. When he has to find a match for the granddaughter of a wealthy man in the area, he lands up in a sticky situation.

With a shaky script, the director is evidently having trouble taking the story ahead. His solution is to add comedy in almost every sequence. Some are fine and the rest fall flat. There are efforts to give some seriousness by adding some messages, which of late seems to be a new trend in Malayalam.

Biju Menon repeats his trademark style yet again though to be fair to the actor, it still works as there is an inherent cuteness in his actions and dialogue delivery.

Aju Varghese looks not so interested in whole proceedings, while Manoj Guinness scores with his numbers. Anaswara Rajan, who was seen recently as a school kid in Thanneermathan Dinangal doesn’t quite look old enough to play the role of the post graduate student who is ready for marriage. Pauly Valsan scores big time as a broker who is Manoharan’s arch rival.

Aadyarathri is the kind of comedy that is strictly meant for those who enjoy mimicry skits. If you belong to that segment, this one could qualify as an okay one time watch.
