Action Hero Biju review

Abrid Shine

Star Cast

Nivin Pauly, Anu Emmanuel

First things first, Abrid Shine’s Action Hero Biju is not like what you usually come across in Malayalam. It is in a way an experiment that is genuine and honest, without the mandatory twists and turns or even a thrilling story line with nail biting action.

It’s a realistic portrayal of incidents that happen in the life of Biju Paulose (Nivin Pauly), a Sub Inspector of police at a certain point of time.

Biju is not the conventional superhero police officer, who can take on any number goons just like that and dance to a peppy number, in a flash.

Instead, he is a normal cop, who is passionate about his responsibilities and is totally committed to his job. Also, he is egoistic, romantic and compassionate like most of us but he has to put on a tough demeanor, along with his uniform.

The whole film is a string of incidents involving the police officer, sewn together without a definite pattern and perhaps it is being shown like turning the pages of his personal diary. There is happiness, tension, anger and sad moments that keep on changing all the time. In between there are some hilarious takes as well.

The narrative tends to meander along in various directions and the lack of a particular focus can turn out to be a hitch for those who are used to the conventional patterns. All said and done, this one is a fabulous tribute to the selfless service rendered by the cops to keep us safe and secure.

Just like his earlier venture, 1983, Abrid Shine handles intense moments spectacularly and there are some scenes that will leave you with a lump in the throat. Then there are some lighter moments, which show that even those rough looking cops have a sense of humour. But there are certain prejudices, like the aversion towards the ‘freaky youngsters’ or gays, for instance.

Nivin Pauly tries his best to stay away from his chocolate boy good looks, to suit his character. He is impressive, especially in those lighter moments and also in the emotional scenes. Anu Emmanuel has nothing much to do other than being a pretty face.

One of the highlights of the film is the superb performance from some of the supporting characters. Watch out for a stellar show from Suraj Venjarammoodu, who is simply outstanding in a brief role. Joju George and Rohini also come up with good performances.

Action Hero Biju is definitely unconventional but has its heart at the right place. This one may be following a style that we are not usually familiar with in Malayalam and there is no denying the fact that it will find a place among the most sincere efforts here, during recent times.
