Adutha Saattai review: Preachy and old-fashioned

Star Cast

Samuthirakani, Thambi Ramaiah, Athulya

Samuthirakani is back with yet another propaganda movie. After Saattai and Appa here comes the third film from the filmmaker turned actor based on the current education system. While the first two films concentrated on the problems faced by school students, Samuthirakani and director Anbazhagan have targeted the college campus as milieu here.

Samuthirakani is a new age MGR, he doesn't drink, smoke and poses himself as an upright individual in most of his films and Adutha Saattai is no exception. He plays a Tamil professor Dayalan, a role model who tries his best to bring in a change in Appa Arts and Science college! But students are divided by caste. The college Principal(Thambi Ramaiah) is also a caste chauvinist! How Samuthirakani change the mindset of students? Does he succeed in his mission?

The film moves on a preachy tone from the beginning so if you are expecting cinematic grammar and subtle treatment, you are in for the wrong movie! Yes, the ideas suggested in the film are quite interesting and it would be great if educational institutes follow the student parliament and try attracting companies in arts and science for campus interviews. But we are unable to celebrate this preachy and old fashioned movie for just the message it tries to convey. Thambi Ramaiah has become a caricature these days, especially in films where he tries to play negative roles.

Samuthirakani is fine as a righteous professor and his off-screen clean image helps him big time but he too overacts on many occasions. The dialogues are preachy and loud. There is no proper screenplay flow in the first half. All we see is random scenes packed without any coherence. Only in the second half, we see a few good moments and performances from the lead cast. Athulya is fine while Yuvan is a complete miscast.

Overall, Adutha Saattai is yet another preachy film from Samuthirakani and director Anbazhagan.
