Even as rumours of Akshay Kumar steeping into Pran’s role in Farhan Akhtar’s remake of Don gathers momentum, Akshay Kumar remains blissfully unaware of these developments.
In a snappy tete-a-tete he admits he was approached to do the role. “But I’m not doing the film. I’d love to work with a director of Farhan Akhtar’s caliber. But if I’m doing Don with Farhan I’d like the title to be Do Don, ha ha”
Fair enough, you mumble. “Right now I’ve three comedies on the floors. With Priyadarshan who did my most successful comedy Hera Pheri I’m now doing Garam Masala which is a remake of his Malayalam hit Boeing Boeing. I play a pilot caught among several women. It’s a fun role, full of mischief. But not vulgar. I’d never do or say anything obscene in my films.”
Akshay is all praise for his co-star John Abraham. “We got along like a house on fire. He’s very well-behaved and very disciplined. Lots of masti on the sets.”
Akshay’s second comedy on the floors is a sequel to Priyadarshan’s Hera Pheri. “And what do you think it’s called? Phir Hera Pheri? Clever, don’t you think?”
The film, directed by writer Neeraj Vora, reunites the Hera Pheri team Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawail and Sunil Shetty.
Pausing for breath Akshay continues. “Finally there’s Deewane Huey Pagal. I feel happy doing so much comedy. But it isn’t as though my career depends on the comic aspect of my career.”
Akshay’s next assignment is with producer Sajid Nadiadwala and co-star Salman Khan. The team gave last year’s hit Mujhse Shaadi Karoge.
“But now we’re changing tracks completely. This time there’s no comedy. It’s what I would call a romantic triangle with Salman, Preity Zinta and me to be directed by Farah Khan’s husband Shirish Kunder.”
The film entitled Jaan-e-Man is scheduled to start in July or August. “I’m looking forward to working again with both Salman and Preity. Salman and I had a ball shooting for Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Contrary to belief I’ve never had any problems with any of my male co-stars, although some of them seem to have had problems with me. But that’s okay.”
And why Preity instead of Akshay’s lucky mascot Priyanka Chopra, with whom he has worked in four hits in a row including Mujhse Shaadi Karogi? “Don’t read meanings into it. The decision to sign a heroine is entirely the producer’s. I’m willing to work with any actress. I’ve very fond memories of working with Preity in one of my favourite films Sangharsh.”
Has he decided not to work with Priyanka because of the rumours linking them? “Of course not! Priyanka and I will certainly work together whenever we get a suitable film. I’ve never allowed rumours and gossip to affect my professionalism. As long as my heart is clean and my wife believes in me, I’ve no reason to get hassled.”
What Akshay is really looking forward to is that Jaan-e-Man isn’t a comedy. “Not that I mind doing comedies. But I never did them together intentionally. Jaan-e-Man is my only new assignment. After that I might just take a break.”
