Prithvitaj, Priyal Gor, Miya
Scenarist turned director Sachy’s maiden venture, Anarkali, is an intense love story between Shanthanu and Nadira.
The strength of their bonding is tested severely, as the lovebirds have to live without seeing or even talking to each other, for years.
The love story happens in a flashback, with Shanthanu (Prithviraj) reaching Lakshadweep as a diving instructor. He finds his former colleague Zachariah (Biju Menon) there, who is now a lighthouse operator.
It all started during his stint as a Sub Lieutenant at the Southern Naval Command when Shanthanu falls in love with Nadira (Priyal Gor), the young daughter of the fiery Rear Admiral Jaffer Imam (Kabir Bedi).
Sometime later, Shanthanu and Zachariah are thrown out of the Navy and they lose contact after a while. Nadira wanted Shanthanu to wait for her and he was doing that for his beloved.
With plots, sub plots, flashbacks and quite a number of songs, Sachy keeps the viewers waiting for almost two hours and forty-five minutes here. A crispier version would have been more welcome could be what you feel like while watching the movie.
Even then, this one is a good film, with delicious packaging, impressive performances and genuine moments. The life in Lakshadweep and the spectacular beauty of the island territory has been shown very well.
Sujith Vaassudev once again comes up terrific visuals that keep you stunned most of the times. Vidyasagar’s music is fine at best.
It is turning out to be fascinating times for Prithviraj and the credit should go to the young hero for his dedication. With his dapper looks and hard work, he comes up with a winner. Debutante Priyal Gor has to maintain a stoic pose throughout and that she does well.
Watch out for yet another brilliant show from Biju Menon. Sudev Nair, who shot into fame with the Kerala state film award for the best actor, proves that he is an actor to watch out for.
Anarkali has its heart at the right place for sure, but one can’t help feeling that it could have been on a different league with some trimming. Grab some popcorn and enjoy this romantic tale. It’s sure to move you!
