Annaatthe review: A disappointing film which tests our patience

Star Cast

Rajinikanth, Keerthy Suresh, Nayanthara, Sathish, Soori, Abhimanyu Singh, Jagapathi Babu

Director Siva has tried to combine two of his successful films Vedalam and Viswasam in Annaatthe by borrowing the characterizations of the villains from his one more blockbuster Siruthai.

Kaalaiyan (Rajinikanth) is a good samaritan in Soorakottai, and his life revolves around sister Thanga Meenatchi (Keerthy Suresh). Kaalaiyan wants his sister to get married in a nearby village but most of the potential alliances politely reject the offer as they feel that his love for his sister would affect the marriage life.

Finally, moved by the kind heart of Kaaliyan, his rival (Prakash Raj) expresses his wish to arrange the wedding between his brother and Thanga Meenatchi! Just when Kaalaiyan is busy preparing for the pompous wedding, Thanga Meenatchi goes missing and the first half ends with a twist. The rest of the film is all about how Keerthy ends up in Kolkata and why she is struggling for money. Will Kaaliayan save his only sister from deadly villains?

Vedalam is about sister sentiment and Viswasam is about a dad's love for his daughter, who only identifies him in the climax. In Annaatthe, the sister doesn't know till the climax that her brother saves her from the multiple villains! Now, you would have guessed why we said Annaatthe is nothing but a mixture of Vedalam and Viswasam! The villains Abhimanyu Singh and Jagapathi Babu are super loud, looks like their costumes, dialogue delivery, and makeup are straight from the hardcore 70's mass masala films in Tollywood!

The first half of Annaatthe moves at a leisure pace with filmy brother-sister sentiment and needless comedy scenes featuring Khushbu, Meena, Sathish, Soori, and others. Nayanthara looks gorgeous and majestic as the lawyer but she has very little to do, and it is Rajinikanth all the way. Keerthy Suresh is earnest but as said earlier, too much melodrama takes away the novelty factor.

Looking at the positives-- Superstar Rajinikanth is looking super smart and young, his dialogue delivery, body language, and comic lines are a treat to watch but after a point, things turn repetitive and predictable. The second good thing about the film is Imman's songs but the background score is too loud and jarring in many places and some of the dialogues are not audible. While the intermission ends with a bang, the second half is tests our patience as it is crass, loud and we slowly lose interest in the proceedings.

The bottom line about Annaatthe is that, although the old Rajini formula is back, the entertainment we had witnessed in those days is missing in this 2021 film.

Verdict: Disappointing
