The coronavirus spread in India has brought down the footfalls in cinema theatres in
Chennai. Please note Chennai is one of the few places in the country which is keeping its
theatres open! But 16 Taluks in Tamil Nadu, bordering neighbouring states theatres and
malls have been shut down.
Here is last weekend CBO, for the sake of it. DQ’s rom-com Kannum Kannum
Kollaiyadithaal can now be classified a super hit. It has grossed Rs 2.83 Cr from Chennai
city in 17 days and continues to top the CBO for third week in a row. !
At the number-2 position is Harish Kalyan and Vivek’s comedy entertainer Dharala Prabhu,
which has got good WOM and reviews and has grossed Rs 37 lakhs in three days. But the
Corona virus fear has eaten into its potential box-office.
Sibiraj’s Walter due to below average report has grossed Rs 34 lakhs and is at number-3
and at number-4 is Vikram Prabhu’s Asura Guru. In the fifth place is the Hollywood actioner
Bloodshot, which opened poorly.
The Dulquer Salmaan romantic thriller Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal, directed by debutant Desingh is working big time at the multiplexes. The film is rocking and has occupied the bigger screens and more shows have been added. It is attracting the youth and has grossed around Rs 1.60 lakhs in 10 days and is at number one slot.
Jiiva’s Gypsy had a slow start at the CBO, as the advance booking opened on day of release, due to doubts over its release mired in financial issues. The film carries mixed reports and is at number two.
In the third place is Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 3, which has taken a good opening. And at number four is the caste film Draupathi, which is doing well at the CBO. Oh My Kadavule celebrate
its 25 th day and is holding well and is at number five.
The big surprise was Dulquer’s long in the making Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal, a romantic thriller that worked due to good writing and packaging by debutant director Desingh. The film after a slow opening picked up on day two due to good reviews and has grossed around Rs 75 lakhs in three days and is at number one slot.
And the big surprise at the number two position is the unknown controversial caste-based drama Draupathi, which grossed around Rs 55 lakhs. In the third place is the feel-good rom-com Oh My Kadavule which grossed around Rs 2.50 Cr from Chennai City in 17 days, super for a small budget film without any big stars.
In the fourth place is the atmospheric horror thriller The Invisible Man, which has taken a good opening. Karthick Naren’s Mafia has not lived up to expectations and has collapsed and has just managed to hang on to the fifth position by its skin.
The footfalls are nothing great this week at CBO, as the content is not so exciting. Jiiva’s mass masala Seeru due to its day one opening piped past its immediate rival to be the number one at CBO with a gross of Rs 56 lakhs.
At the number two position is Mani Ratnam produced Dhana directed Vaanum Kottattum, which after a slow start picked up and has grossed Rs 55 lakhs. In the third place is the comic book big Hollywood actioner Birds of Prey.
Mysskin’s Psycho continues to hold tight at number four and in the fifth place is 1917 The Movie, which is having a good run at CBO.
As expected Arun Vijay- Prasanna’s Karthick Naren directed Mafia dominated the screens during the weekend. Mafia has grossed a decent Rs 1.15 Crs from CBO in its first three days. This stylish action film has done well, though it carries mixed reports and is number one at CBO.
In the number two position is Oh My Kadavule, which can be classified as a multiplex hit, as it grossed Rs 1.80 Cr in 10 days. And in the third place is Ayushman Khurrana’s Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan.
In the fourth place is Telugu new comedy Bheeshma. And in fifth place is last week’s number one Naan Sirithal, which has fallen like a ton of bricks.
The Valentine Day in a way boosted ticket sales at Chennai Box-Office. On Friday, young couples flooded the theatres especially multiplexes, which helped the two Tamil youth-oriented releases – Naan Sirithal and Oh My Kadavule.
Hip Hop Adhi’s Naan Sirithal due to his personal popularity took a good opening and grossed Rs 1.15 Cr and is the clear number one. Though the rom-com with a message carries average audience report, it is collecting well.
The big surprise at number two is the rom-com Oh My Kadavule, which has brought romance back with a very impressive three day Valentine weekend gross of Rs 85 Lakhs. The film with upcoming stars like Ashok Selvan and Ritika got rave reviews and a cameo by Vijay Sethupathi helped it to get that opening.
In the third place is Vijay Deverakonda’s Telugu film World Famous Lover which carried mixed reports but average collections. And in the fourth place is the Oscar winner the South Korean film Parasite. At number five is Love Aaj Kal 2, which has not taken a good opening.
The footfalls across cinema halls in Chennai City were low as the content was not attractive. Santhanam’s Dagaalty on day one took an OK opening but was WOM was negative and collections started dropping from Saturday. Still, it has managed Rs 62 lakhs in three days and is number one this week at the CBO.
Mysskin’s Psycho holds strong due to weak new releases and is able to attract the multiplex audiences and is at number two position and has grossed Rs 2.41 Cr in 10 days.
At number three place is the Hollywood action-comedy Bad Boys For Life, which took a decent opening and grossed Rs 34 lakhs in three days. In the fourth place is Nadodigal 2, which had a late release on Saturday and carries mixed reports. Rajinikanth’s Darbar holds on to number five position.
The number one film at the CBO during the 5-day Pongal holidays weekend is Rajinikanth’s Darbar. Though the film carried mixed reports, as it was released prior to Pongal, the family audiences preferred it over others. Darbar has grossed Rs 13.25 Cr in 11 days from CBO and is the clear number one by a mile!
Dhanush’s Pattas is at number two with an impressive 5-day Pongal gross of Rs 2.15 Cr. In the third place is Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, which is the clear Sankranthi winner.
And in the fourth place is Ajay Devgn’s period action drama Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which is holding good in its second week. Mahesh Babu’s Sarileru Neekevvaru has dropped to number five.
Another below-average week at the CBO, as footfalls are down. Once again an OLF (other language films) has dominated, the box-office, with Jumanji: The Next Level grossing Rs 90 lakhs in three days.
The surprise showing of Telugu film Venky Mama has made it to the number two position. And at number three is the Hindi film Mardaani 2, which had a decent opening in multiplexes.
At number four is the Tamil new release Kaalidas, which has got good reviews but limited screens. In the fifth position is last week’s Iruttu, which can now be termed as an average grosser.
It was the big Christmas weekend at the CBO. Sivakarthikeyan’s super hero film Hero, with a message, has taken a good opening and is clear number one in its opening weekend. The film has grossed around Rs 1.65 Cr in three days.
At the number two position is Karthi’s Thambi which has grossed around Rs 1.08 Cr in its opening weekend. In the third place is Salman Khan’s Dabangg 3, which carries mixed reports and has grossed around Rs 35 lakhs.
The Telugu family emotional drama with comedy Prati Roju Pandaage is at number four and has grossed around Rs 29 lakhs in three days from CBO. In the fifth place is the franchise Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker, which has grossed around Rs 25 lakhs.....
