Champion review : A watchable sports drama

Star Cast

Vishwa, Narain, Vasavi, Manoj Bharathiraja

Suseenthiran's Champion is yet another sports revenge action drama set in North Madras. But unlike the recent releases in the same genre, this one is not half baked and is honest. The hero Vishwa knows his game right, his athletic physique, authentic football kicks and raw performance make us root for the film to a large extent.

Jones (Vishwa) is an aspiring football player who hails from North Chennai but his mother Jaya(Vasavi) doesn't want him to concentrate on the game and pleads him to focus on studies. The main reason behind Jaya's fear is her husband Gopinath Dhiraviyam (Manoj Bharathiraja) was murdered in 7s football, a violent sport in North Chennai. But Jones continues to play football and even enrolls himself to a leading club spearheaded by coach Santha(Narain). Interestingly, Santha and Jones's dad are good friends. Meanwhile, Jones also comes to know how his dad was brutally murdered in a football match by local politician Dhanasekhar(Stunt Shiva). Now Jones has to choose between football and revenge...

Champion can't be termed as the best film from Suseenthiran but compared to his recent few films, this one is watchable thanks to the earnest performance of Vishwa, Naren and the genuine emotional undercurrent runs throughout the film. But the performance of the two heroines are not up to the mark although Mrinalini's angle provides a twist.

After Kaithi, Narain gets an interesting character here and needless to say, he has once again given his best. If he continues to choose such well etched roles, he could be the next quality character actor in Tamil cinema.

Technically Aroll Corell's music is a big plus both in background score and songs. Sujith Sarang's cinematography is okay but the racy editing spoils the emotional quotient of the film. Even before we observe a scene, focus shifts to the next scene. For a film like Champion, steady frame and slow transition would have been more apt.

Overall, Champion is a watchable sports revenge drama for the earnest performances of Vishwa and Narain.

Verdict: A Watchable sport drama
