Chithirai Sevvanam review: An emotional thriller

Star Cast

Samuthirakani, Pooja Kannan, Rima Kallingal

In his debut directorial Chithirai Sevvanam, stunt choreographer Silva has tried to deliver an emotional thriller loosely based on the shocking incidents that happened in Pollachi.

Muthupandi (Samuthirakani) loves his daughter Aishwarya (Pooja Kannan) and his only ambition in life is to make her a doctor. Aishwarya is also motivated to become a doctor at a young age after her mom (Vidya Pradeep) lost her life without proper medical attention. Just when Aishwarya becomes a district topper in her twelfth standard exams, Muthupandi comes to know that she should also clear NEET exams to get a medical seat.

As per the advice of her college principal, Muthupandi enrolls his daughter in a private coaching center and she stays in a hostel to continue her studies. Within a few days, Muthupandi comes to know that her daughter is missing after someone secretly filmed and leaked her video in the hostel bathroom. Now, Muthupandi and an upright cop (Rima Kallingal) go in search of Aishwarya and the culprits.

Silva has made an emotional thriller and tried his best to earn the sympathy of the audience. But directors should also keep in mind that sexual harassment is a crime and filmmakers need not have to make the victim a brilliant student and comes from an underprivileged family. Take Drishyam and Delhi Crime as an example, such horrific incidents can happen to any girl.

Performance-wise, Samuthirakani has as usual given his best while Pooja Kannan is also okay for a newcomer. Rima Kallingal has done her part well as the upright cop.

While Samuthirakani comes as a helpless dad in most of the first half, we get to see the other side of him in the interval and that's where the film takes the convenient route.

Technically, Sam CS's score and songs are perfect for the film while cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa and Venkatesh is adequate.

To conclude, Chithirai Sevvanam is a decent watch for its core theme but the execution is average!

Verdict: Watchable
