Kollywood is going to celebrate Christmas in a big way. Never before have there been so many Tamil releases. Christmas has become the new season for releasing films.
Earlier December 25 was considered to be too close to Pongal the season for biggies and traditionally there were no major releases. However, this year due to an avalanche of films, Christmas has become prime time.
On December 19, Mysskin directed, director Bala’s B Studios produced Pisasu is releasing big through Sri Thenandal Films. It is a horror thriller with new faces under two hours. The other release of the week is Sutrula a horror action film directed by Rajesh with Richard in the lead. Both the films have UA certificate.
Christmas Day – December 25 is going to be a very big weekend for Tamil cinema. For the first time on Christmas day four films are releasing.
Escape Artists Madan backed Prabu Solomon directed Kayal has newcomers in the lead with very good music by D Imman. Kayal is a love story set against the background of the 2004 Tsunami that hit TamilNadu and southern parts of Kerala. The film is said to have awesome special effects and is releasing a day before- the 10th anniversary of Tsunami which hit TN coast on Dec 26, 2004. The film carries a U certificate.
Director Shankar produced Kappal directed by Karthik G Krish, one of his former assistants is hitting the screens for Christmas. The film is said to be a romantic comedy riot and features Vaibhav and Sonam Bajwa, with Karunakaran in supporting role. Shankar who saw a special preview of the film was so impressed by it that he decided to purchase and promote the film under his S Pictures banner. Remember he had closed down S Pictures four years back after incurring huge losses. Shankar is confident that Kappal with a U certificate will sail through Christmas and become a hit.
The other big movie with stars is Hitesh Jabak produced Meaghamann directed by Magizh Thirumeni. The film features popular actors Arya and Hansika in the lead . with music by Thaman. It is an action packed adventure film set in Goa, with Arya taking on 7 powerful villains. Remember Thirumeni’s last release the Arun Vijay starrer Thadayara Thakkaa was well made action film which was critically acclaimed and a hit. A lot is riding on the film for Arya, who needs a hit badly. Meaghamann has been censored with a UA certificate.
The popular young star Vikram Prabhu who is riding wave and has a Christmas release with Vellakara Durai, directed by Ezhil and produced by leading financier and distributor Anbuchezhiyan of Gopuram Films. Vikram Prabhu is paired with Sri Divya in this rural romantic comedy which also has Suri and is laced with masala. The film has music by D Imman and has been censored with a clean U certificate.
All these Christmas releases are fighting for screens but are marketed by some of the biggest names in the industry. There is lot of pressure on theatres as fight for screens is turning into a all out war between influential distributors and powerful producers. Meanwhile Rajinikanth’s Lingaa will try to hold on to its screens as it enters its third week during the Christmas weekend. Merry Christmas!
