Churuli review: Raw and thrilling

Star Cast

Chemban Vinod Jose, Vinay Forrt, Jaffer Idukki

Filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Churuli, streaming on Sony LIV now, is in a way an extension of the thought put forward in his earlier movie Jallikattu which said how the difference between man and a beast vanishes, when greed, hunger or anger takes over the human minds.

The movie begins with a narration about a Brahmin who was fooled by a wily Perumadan, living in a forest. The relevance of this fable is understood from the story that follows.

Antony (Chemban Vinod Jose) and Sajivan aka Shajivan (Vinay Forrt) are two cops going to a remote forest area called ‘Churuli’ to nab a hiding criminal. They pretend to be daily wage workers hired by someone named Thankan.

The two get into a jeep with some natives, who are nice to them until they all cross a risky and seriously dilapidated wooden bridge.

On entering their territory the sudden change and the brutal behavior of the people shocks the cops. They use cuss words and expletives in plenty. The jeep reaches a modest local liquor shop run by Kariachan (Jaffer Idukki) where the two cops join as workers. Their search for the criminal continues in between.

Based on an interesting story by Vinoy Thomas, S Hareesh has written a rather packed script, which has been made into a thrilling movie by Lijo. With breathtaking visuals and terrific background score, the master filmmaker takes you along to a labyrinth that is fascinating.

In roles where they have to swear and fight so often in a tough terrain, Chemban Vinod Jose, Vinay Forrt and Jaffer Idukki are really good. The rest of the cast have also done their parts impressively.

Churuli is raw and is not certainly for the faint hearted. The movie says that the real colours of humans come out once the pretentions or the ways to impress the society are over. It is powerful and relevant. Watch it!

Verdict: Raw and thrilling
