Cold Case review: A decent template thriller!

Director

Tanu Balak

Star Cast

Prithviraj Sukumaran, Aditi Balan

Director Tanu Balak’s Cold Case is a murder mystery where new leads are added one after the other, keeping the viewer guessing almost till the end. ACP Satyajit (Prithviraj Sukumaran) is in charge of an investigation where a human skull is found in a plastic bag from a stream.

Meanwhile, there is an interesting parallel plot happening here with TV journalist Medha (Aditi Balan) feeling some eerie happenings around her, in her new rented house. She is a single mother, who is in fact doing a show in TV with mysterious happenings as her subject.

The viewer gets clues from both the cop and also from the journo, who are investigating the same case in their own ways.

The story is being narrated here in a conventional way with the usual templates like darkness, scary doll, and flickering lights being used frequently to scare us. Then there is a blind woman, who is an expert in occult and paranormal activities. The leads seem to come through coincidences, which makes it easy for the investigation and less exciting for the discerning viewer.

With good settings and excellent visuals the director manages to make the whodunit interesting in parts. Even then the length of the movie, which has a duration of just over 140 minutes, seems tad too long.

It is Prithviraj’s excellent performance that makes this thriller engaging. He looks fit as the investigation officer but his make-up and fitted uniform look too perfect. Aditi Balan shines in her role as a journalist. The rest of the cast have done their parts fine.

In these days of smart thrillers that keep the viewer on the edge of their seats, Cold Case is an okay one, with an almost predictable track and cliched moments. It leaves you with many unanswered questions. Having said that, this one could easily qualify as a fine one-time watch.

Verdict: Watchable
