Friendship review: A watchable entertainer

John Paul Raj, Sham Surya

Star Cast

Losliya, Sathish, Harbhajan

Directors John Paul Raj and Sham Surya’s Friendship is loosely inspired by the Malayalam movie Queen. It is a campus thriller, which is the launchpad of former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who is popular as a Chennai Super Kings player in IPL. If you follow Harbhajan Singh on Twitter, he has many times expressed his love for Tamil. Losliya of Big Boss 3 debuts in a pivotal role. The director's John Paul Raj and Sham Surya have used both these celebrities as the film’s selling point. They have made some changes to the Malayalam original for the nativity factor, which has helped with the message the film carries.

Anitha(Losliya ) is the one and only girl student in the Mechanical Department of an Engineering college in Coimbatore. Born and brought up in an orphanage, Anitha is also a cancer patient but she makes everyone around her happy. She encourages her friends Bhaji (Harbhajan Singh), a Punjabi boy who loves Tamil culture, and Jeeva (Satish)  to concentrate on cricket and other art activities. They also come out with an innovative project to help a physically challenged girl student to walk. Slowly the gang develops a strong bonding and friendship which creates jealousy among others.  While Anitha helps everyone, she dies mysteriously. The rest of the film is about how Anitha’s friends suspicious about her death go all out to unearth the hidden secret!

Friendship offers nothing new as it only follows the tried and tested format. The directors have also given solid 20 minutes to the cricket match episode, just because the “Turbanator” is acting in the film!  The VFX in the cricket match scene could have been better.  Losliya tries to deliver a bubbly performance and succeeds to a large extent, while Sathish and Harbhajan Singh are adequate. The directors have placed Harbhajan's character among a group of friends saving him from the scrutiny of lip movement. Satish is good as the friend who talks with punchlines.  Monica plays a key role as the crippled girl and is impressive.

Friendship first half in the college works to a large extent, while the second half is more tension-filled with far fewer lighter moments.  Arjun in a cameo as a vigilante lawyer in the second half-court scene holds it together, along with MS Bhaskar.  On the whole Friendship is a one-time watch!

Verdict - Watchable
