Goodalochana review-A Lowbrow comedy that fails to impress

Thomas Sebastian

Star Cast

Dhyan Sreenivasan, Aju Varghese, Mamta Mohandas

Just like most comedies in Malayalam, director Thomas Sebastian’s Goodalochana also begins with a gang of jobless youngsters, here four of them, who spend their time fooling around.

Jamsheer (Hareesh Kanaran), Ajaz (Sreenath Bhasi), Varun (Dhyan Sreenivasan) and Prakashan (Aju Varghese) are great friends hailing from Kozhikode and their families are not happy that they have no real plans to move ahead in life. After a while, they decide to start a business to prove it to the world that they are capable of doing big things in life. But their plans never succeed and to sail through this situation, they hatch a new plan.

The plan, perhaps inspired from a Gujarati movie titled Bey Yaar, is what the makers are trying to narrate here. But the journey until that point is rather tedious, with only Hareesh Kanaran providing some funny lines here and there.

Worse still, even after that point where the main plot has been told, the movie goes on and on without any real purpose.

Thomas Sebastian, whose earlier offerings are Maya Bazaar and Jamna Pyaari, struggles with a rather shaky script from Dhyan Sreenivasan. There are efforts to bring in the local flavor with the food and the style, but it never really helps. The visuals are fine but the background score, repeating the dialogues with a musical tone, is not really pleasing.

It is evident from early on that the main attraction here is Hareesh Kanaran, who manages to evoke some laughs. Aju Varghese has also performed quite sincerely. Sreenath Bhasi is not really in his usual form and Dhyan Sreenivasan seems to have realized he has to play the hero, only towards the end portions.

Among the female leads, Mamta Mohandas is fine in a brief role but Niranjana Anoop has nothing much to do.

Goodalochana is one of those films that never really keeps the viewers engaged, interested or even affect in any way.

Verdict: Lowbrow comedy
