Gulaebaghavali review- A Roller-coaster ride
Prabhu Deva, Hansika, Revathy, Yogi Babu
Comedy is a tricky genre, as humour is different to different people. KJR Studios Gulaebaghavali is a slapstick roller-coaster ride where there are plenty of moments that are really funny, and then there are some portions that seem unnecessarily contrived.
Prabhu Deva is always known for films with humor laced with action elements, peppy songs and some 'wow' dance steps. In these departments he doesn't disappoint you, but the film completely belongs to Revathy. She steals the thunder with her comedy timing and quirky body language.
The Florida Project review: Feels like life | Agnyaathavaasi review: Pawan Kalyan at his best | The Post review: A lucid ode to journalism | Paddington 2 review: A delightful sequel | Call me by Your Name review: Love, unadulterated | Downsizing review: A strangely complex masterpiece
Badri (Prabhu Deva) is a right hand to Nambi (Mansoor Ali Khan), head of an antique idol smuggling gang. Viji (Hansika) is a small-time crook whose job to trap rich men in pubs and snatch money from them. Then there is Masha (Revathy), an expert car thief and we also have Munish (Ramdoss), a loyalist to a local gangster (Anandaraj). While Badri, Viji, and Munish are assigned to find a treasure hidden in a village named Gulaebaghavali, Masha joins them on their way. The rest of the film is all about the fantastic four and their roller-coaster adventurous ride.
Gulaebaghavali works mainly because of the well-sketched comic characters. It’s very rare to see a female actress pulling off equal dosage of comedy and action in Tamil films but Revathy aces it in style. Whenever Revathy appears on the screen, the pace of the film picks up. Prabhu Deva and Hansika looks good and does their parts well.
Motta Rajendran is another interesting cast in the film and his sentiment portions and the two mother glorifying songs (Kalayil Thinamum from New and Amma.. Amma from VIP 2) are a laugh riot. Though Sathyan’s characterization is interesting, his portions are minimal and Munishkanth, who is known for his fabulous comic presence shines once again. The director could’ve used comedian Yogi Babu better as he is in top form these days.
Vivek-Mervin duo’s songs are already chartbusters and they have also done a good job with the background score. Songs are shot lavishly and technically the film is sound. Peter Hein’s stunts are impressive in the interval and climax portions. The CG work in the Seramal Ponaal song is also remarkable for a slap-stick comedy film.
Regarding the screenplay, Kalyan takes his own time to establish characters in the first half and the tempo is high in the last twenty minutes before the intermission. The second half also has an equal number of flat and fun moments. But when you walk out of the hall, the overall feel is that film has offered us good entertainment. A perfect film this holiday festival season.

Enjoyed #Gulaebaghavali, an adventure comedy with some well written comic stretches. It's a relief to see an actress steal the limelight in a meaty part and @RevathyAsha is a delight to watch in the film.

It's not quite there in terms of both writing and execution, but #Gulaebaghavali is quite funny, with the cast, especially @RevathyAsha, having a ball. A pleasant surprise, like #MaragathaNanayam last year. Could be the dark horse among the three Pongal releases.
