Honey Bee 2: Celebrations review - A lazy attempt

Director

Lal Jr.

Star Cast

Asif Ali, Bhavana

Honey Bee 2: Celebrations is director Lal Jr.’s sequel to his 2013 comedy thriller, Honey Bee. The first one has by now received enormous popularity, especially with so many lighter moments involving Asif’s gang of buddies speaking the peculiar Kochi slang.

The new story begins from where the earlier one ended. The fiery Punyalan family has now agreed to the proposal of their girl Angel (Bhavana) tying the knot with Seban (Asif Ali). Ferno (Baburaj), Abu (Sreenath Bhasi) and Ambrose (Balu Varghese) are with their branded mannerisms, supporting the couple.

In fact, the trio tries a bit too hard to make the viewers laugh and joining them in that effort are Michael Punyalan (Lal)’s brothers and his family members, who were busy chasing the lovebirds in the first episode. Seban’s parents, lawyer Thampi Antony (Sreenivasan) and Ruby (Lena) are introduced, and the families begin the preparations for the wedding.

But the problem begins when you realise that the makers have nothing much in terms of a storyline this time. The humour, which is about booze and mostly peppered with double meanings, is barely enough to evoke laughter.

The situations are presented as serious but you never understand what the brouhaha is all about. The story gets emotional after a while, but you are never really affected by the incidents here.

Some of the scenes or even a few of those characters have no real connection with the main storyline and acts as mere fillers to kill time. The film suffers from ineffective writing and appears much longer than its actual length of 138 minutes. The songs that come in regular intervals actually add to your misery.

Both Asif and Bhavana have to maintain a single expression throughout the film and suffers from badly written characters. Baburaj, Sreenath Bhasi and Balu try hard to repeat the mood with their mannerisms and style like last time, but fails miserably.

Honey Bee 2: Celebrations is a lazy attempt that is nowhere in the league of the earlier one. Watch this only at your own risk!
