Movie Title

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Star Cast

1999`s much awaited film is finally at the theatres and once again Sanjay Leela Bhansali doesn`t disappoint. Rich in colour and emotions, `HDDCS` is an entertainer and keeps you absorbed throughout, it`s 23 reels and 12 songs notwithstanding.

The story revolves around the light-eyed lovely Nandini, daughter of a prosperous Gujrati singer (Vikram Gokhale). Although the inhabitants of her palatial house seem to have all the time on earth for song and dance, Bhansali manages to bring out the colourful effervescence of the region through the songs, rituals, phrases and also the costumes of his lead characters. Life changes for Nandini when Sameer (Salman Khan, supposed to be half-Italian) comes to learn music from her father. It`s love at first sight and much of the first half is taken up by the mischievous pranks they play on each other.

The lovers are of course separated (how else would you have 23 reels) thanks to paternal pressures and while Nandini is married to the reserved lawyer Vanraj (Ajay Devgan), Sameer goes back home to pasta land. Vanraj soon discovers that Nandini`s affection lies elsewhere and being an ideal husband takes her all the way to Italy to find her lover! The story takes a turn when Nandini, who till then had resented Vanraj realises his true worth and finally decides to give her heart to him.

A beautifully presented story about loving and losing, `HDDCS` does remind you of the Anil -Padmini-Naseer starrer `Woh Saat Din` but there is definitely more to the film. The music by first timer Ismail Darbar is praiseworthy and fitting to the various moods of the story. The placement of the title song is extremely well done.Salman Khan is utterly loveable as the fun loving but devoted Sameer, while Ajay Devgan seems perfect as the reserved but honest Vanraj.

However the film belongs to Aishwarya Rai, who has been presented brilliantly by the director and has done a good job, finally. She`s the best choice for the mischievous, fun filled Nandini with the spark and the Nandini who feels that life has gone out of her.

The cinematography is brilliant, especially when it comes to capturing the rich local colours. The choreography is good, especially in songs like Dholi Taro.Bhansali could`ve done away with some parts in the second half but although they lengthen the film, they also add to the final decision in the climax. His `Khamoshi` was a beautifully made film, which failed to shake up the box office, and we hope that `HDDCS` will not be a repeat of the earlier.
