Mullum Malarum is undeniably a cult classic movie in Rajinikanth’s career, it is one of the rare cases where we have seen the Superstar as a complete actor and he even rated the film’s director Mahendran as his most favourite filmmaker.
At the Wagah audio launch, Mahendran narrated an untold secret about the hindrance that he had faced while making Mullum Malarum and how Kamal Haasan helped him out.
“Today, many dignitaries have remembered Kamal’s contribution in their lives. The great artist has helped me out and if he wasn't there, I wouldn't have become a director and delivering this speech now”, said Mahendran.
“While making Mullum Malarum, I couldn't get a proper cinematographer and was completely disappointed that even thought that I will never make this film”, remembered the veteran. “It was Kamal, who introduced Balu Mahendra to me”, he added.
The director said “Similarly, my producer was not happy with the budget of Mullum Malarum and he asked me to release the film without a scene, which must come before the ‘Senthalam Poovil’ song. Despite my earnest effort, my producer wasn't convinced and then, Kamal too tried to convince him but nothing worked. The producer keep insisted us to release the film without the scene and he even asked us to remove the song”.
“Finally, Kamal asked the producer if he is okay with someone else funding for the scene and he readily agreed. Yes, Kamal Haasan spent his own money for my film. If he had not helped, Mullum Malarum would have never released or it wouldn't have come out like how it is now”, concluded Mahendran.
