The Apartment review: Don`t even knock here

Jag Mundhra

Star Cast

Tanushree Dutta, Neetu Chandra, Rohit Roy, Anupam Kher

Undeserving storylines getting passed off as thrillers. Schizophrenics portrayed as crazy killers. The most innocuous seeming characters revealing themselves to be dangerous ones. Yawn. We?ve seen all this in a zillion films. Why work the same tired plot and give it a roommate spin?

Inspired from several thrillers like Bridget Fonda?s Single White Female (1992) and the more recent Hindi B-grader, Girlfriend (2004), this one is neither controversial nor suspenseful.

What you have is plenty of sleaze: the two actresses are made to float around in slinky, hardly-there nightwear, there are item numbers galore, and the bathing scene filmed on Neetu Chandra appears and disappears without context.

Preeti (Tanushree Dutta) is an airhostess living in Mumbai with her boyfriend (Rohit Roy). She?s suddenly single and empty-nested, due to a misunderstanding between them. On looking for a roommate she meets Neha (Neetu Chandra), a library assistant. The two form a happy twosome with Neha cooking and taking care of the home, much to Preeti?s delight.

But things begin going wrong when Preeti discovers Neha?s extreme animosity towards her boyfriend, and then the adorable neighbourhood cat is found murdered. The second half is bizarre. The police add up clues as if this were the only case on their hands. Preeti provokes Neha, after knowing she?s mentally unstable. And who will come to the rescue of the damsel in distress? Why, it?s the boyfriend of course, who comes to the rescue with a bullet wound and all. The backstory establishing Neha?s condition is hilarious, which it isn?t meant to be. If there?s a homosexual tinge to the story, it isn?t overt.

Predictable all through, the film?s intention isn?t quite clear. Performances are alright. As far as psycho killers go, Urmila Matondkar raised the bar way too high in Kaun. But Chandra is notably earnest doing the loony killer towards the finale.

Jug Mudhra?s film history is curious: from Bawandar (2001) to Provoked (2007) to Shoot on Sight (2008). This is the weakest of his recent films. Avoid.

Verdict: One star
