Kamal Haasan, Pooja Kumar, Upendra, Andrea Jeremiah, Rahul Bose, Jaideep Ahlawat, Shekhar Kapur
Kamal Haasan`s reverie-like movie with a whopping budget ,Vishwaroopam, is out. The Telugu version got to a good release all over AP though there was a hitch from the state government in the morning.
Vishwanth (Kamal Haasan), a dance trainer along with wife Dr Nirupama (Pooja Kumar) lives in New York. The covert mission of Vishwanth is to stop a sinister bombing plot to blow up New York by an Al-Qaida member Omar Qureshi (Rahul Bose) and his group. Who is Vishwanath and how he succeeds in his undertaking forms the rest of the story.
Kamal Haasan`s role lacks lucidity in terms of identity till the climax. Because of it, Kamal Haasan couldn`t show any variations in his role making it one dimensional. Age is very much telling on Kamal Haasan and he does give an impression that he is not fit for such a spy thriller.
Pooja Kumar is hot and perfectly suits the role. Andrea Jeremiah as Ashmita has very little to do.
Shekar Kapoor as Mr.Jagannath appeared in a less prominent role. Rahul Bose does well as the antagonist. He got almost the same footage as the hero in the film. Jaideep Ahlawat acted well as fellow terrorist to Rahul Bose. Nasser is wasted. Rest of the cast is OK.
Though the main plot of the film, terrorism, is tried and tested, his screenplay engages the audiences during the most part of the film. The movie starts slowly and picks up speed once Omar identifies Vishwanth as Wisam Ahmad Kashmiri. Few scenes shot in the backdrop of Afghanistan requires to be edited.
One big drawback of the film is its abrupt climax, giving a hint to the audiences that the director might be planning a sequel.
Cinematographer Sanu Varghese did a praiseworthy work using the sharp approaches showing New York and Afghanistan. Music directors Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy`s re-recording is a plus point to the movie. Their background score is superior and elevates the mood to a different level.
Art work around the scenes in Afghanistan are good. Casting is good and production values are high, though one doesn`t really feel the weight of the budget to the tune of Rs 100 crore at most paces in the film.
Vishwaroopam is a solemn spy thriller without trundling away from the core subject. The movie has an interesting screenplay with hero and an adversary working for Al-Qaida, but with different mottos. However, the movie`s progress is in one dimension as screenplay lacks entertainment and drama.
Vishwaroopam is an honest movie which appeals to those who like serious spy thrillers. Lack of engaging elements and family drama makes it less appealing to family audience and mass.
Verdict: Can be watched once
Time pass comedy entertainer
Average comedy entertainer
Decent rural family entertainer
Soubin Shahir and Mamta Mohandas shine in this conventional film
